About Kada, Wakayama

Kada is a village of fishing and tourism located in the far western part of Wakayama City near the border between Osaka.

50 minutes by car, 90 minutes by train (Nankai Kada line) from the Kansai International Airport.This village of fishing and tourism is famous in the Kansai region for its wild-caught red sea breams.Awashima Shrine is known as the origin of “Hina-nagashi” (Festival of sending out Hina-dolls into the ocean).The Awashimado Hall in Senso-ji (Tokyo) was built to enshrine Awashima Myojin, a deity transferred from Awashima Shrine.It is also a training place for the Shugendo, which is the foundation of the World Heritage Kumano Kodo.Tomogashima island became a popular spot that resembles the scenes from the movie “Castle in the Sky”.

Tomogashima

Tomogashima Islands, the tropical paradise in the Kitan strait, is made from four islands: Jinoshima, Torajima, Kamijima and Okinoshima. Okinoshima had acted as a fortress during the World War and you can still see the batteries along a hiking trail in the island. You can also take a stroll to see the lighthouse, the 2nd and 3rd batteries, an observation platform to the pier.

Awashima Shrine

It is the grand head shrine of approximately 1000 Awashima shrines across the country. The shrine where Sukunahikona-no-mikoto is enshrined is among the oldest in Wakayama. It is said to work wonders on women’s complications and many female worshippers visit the shrine to pray for safe birth. You can also feel the mysterious atmosphere where rows and rows of countless dolls line up at the shrine, for it is known widely for the memorials they hold for them.

Ennogyoja-do Training Hall

It is located on a ridge where you can see the view of the the training locations in Tomogashima. It is a shrine which worships the founder of Shugendo, Enno Ozuno. In the training season, you can meet the Buddhist Mountain Priests who come to pray at the Hall. You will have to climb the stairs of 117 steps to the Main Hall, but the view from the top will make it worth your while.

Kada Kasuga Taisha Shrine

It is yet unknown when the Main Hall was built, but it is written in an ancient history book from the Edo period that Fujiwara Mitsufuku who used to be the agent in charge in this area during 1303 to 1317 had deified his ancestor god and named it “Kasuga Shrine” after the gods of Kasuga. As it is a shrine of a fishing village, you can see carvings of Ebisu, the god of wealth, along with clams and shrimps on the wooden support on top of the main beam of the building.

Kada Beach

Enjoy the spectacular view of the islands in the Osaka Bay from this beach. The waves are gentle so small children can play peacefully. You can have fun having barbeques along with the nation’s first beach glamping at the private area. Rental cookstoves with charcoal for barbeques are available. Check the website for more details.

Shinrin Park

Actual-sized statues of dinosaurs and other animals will greet you at the park. You can also see the view of Kansai International Airport, Tomogashima Islands, Awajishima Island and Shikoku from the observation facility. A hydrangea Arbor Day is held every February and you can walk along the beautifully colored path of them in full bloom in June.
